What to expect at your appointment:

We look forward to seeing you. Our doctors and staff strive to provide excellent medical care in a warm and friendly environment.

We schedule appointments between 7:30 am—4:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Most of our patients are referred to us by medical professionals, although we do accept non-referred patients with known or suspected retinal disorders. Please be aware that your insurance may require you to see your primary eye doctor prior to a consultation with a retina specialist.

We limit our practice only to diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous; as such we do not prescribe glasses, contact lenses, or perform general eye exams.

For new patients, upon your arrival to our office, you will be greeted by the San Diego Retina Associates staff. They will copy your insurance information and ask you to complete a patient information form and a medical history questionnaire, if you have not already done so. It is very important that you bring your insurance card(s), your current eye glasses, a driver, and your current list of medications.

New patient forms are available on our website for those who wish to complete them prior to their arrival, we encourage you to do so in order to make your first visit as smooth and efficient as possible. Simply download and print each of the forms (in PDF format) using the above link (or the one at the bottom of this page), fill in all the necessary information, and bring them with you to your visit.

If an interpreter is needed, please have someone come with you who can translate.

At San Diego Retina Associates we make every effort to maintain an on time schedule to minimize our patient’s wait time. Arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment will give us sufficient time to make sure your records are up to date with all the important information we require. Late arrivals of greater than 15 minutes will unfortunately have to be rescheduled.

Depending on the complexity of your problem, your first visit with us may require upwards of 2 hours. Diagnostic testing will likely be performed at the initial visit, and the results will be given to you that same day. Testing may include color photographs, fluorescein angiography (FA), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and/or ophthalmic ultrasound.

We will dilate your eye(s) at every visit. Please be aware it takes 30 minutes or more to obtain complete dilation. Pupillary dilation may blur your vision for up to 6 hours as well as making your eye(s) more sensitive to light. Because driving may be difficult immediately following your eye exam, you should arrange to have someone drive you home.

Your medical evaluation will begin with an ophthalmic technician talking with you to obtain a more detailed medical and ocular history, as well as conducting a preliminary eye exam, including checking your vision (with glasses) and eye pressure. Drops will then be placed in your eyes to dilate your pupils. After your pupils are dilated, initial imaging may be conducted before one of our doctors meets with you to examine your eyes. To thoroughly evaluate the retina, vitreous, and macula, the doctor will use highly sophisticated medical instruments and bright lights.

After your examination and any additional tests are completed, your results will be explained to you by your physician. We encourage you to bring a family member or friend along to the appointment to be certain that all your questions are answered completely and that you understand the diagnosis and treatment options. We will send a consultation report to your referring doctor.


Treatments may include injections into or around the eye, retinal lasers, office procedures, and/or surgery performed in an operating room.

We perform laser treatments and intraocular injections in our office. Any required treatments will usually be scheduled on another day shortly following the initial visit. However, if the need for treatment is emergent, a procedure will likely be performed on the same day as your consultation visit. Any same day treatment requires that you have somebody to safely drive you home.

Operating room surgery will be scheduled at one of our affiliated hospitals or surgery centers. You will receive complete instructions for pre and post-operative care. As our surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, you will go home the same day. Our physicians will see you the day after surgery for a follow up visit in our clinic (not the operating room), and thereafter at increasing intervals as needed.
